In the heart of Alleppey, like a precious jewel nestled within the serene waters of Kaithapuzha Lake, lies a hidden gem: Kakathuruth Island. This island, stretching like a slender thread of silk, measures a mere 3km by 2km, and holds a history as unique as a rare gem. It harkens back to a time when flocks of crows, like a swirling storm of ebony feathers, would gather together, creating a tapestry of black wings, and thus opening the door for a community of humans seeking solace, like lost souls finding sanctuary.
National Geographic, in a feature article, illuminated this extraordinary place like a beacon, launching it into the global spotlight like a shooting star. Initially, in the 1970s, Kakathuruth Island bloomed like a flower, becoming a haven for those without land, a refuge as welcoming as a warm embrace for 216 families seeking a new beginning. Inland backwater fishing and farming became their means of survival, and the resilient community flourished like a flower in a barren desert against all odds.
The island is only accessible by canoe boat, known as Kadath Vallam. Cycles are like the only mode of transportation, and the island’s three-kilometer-long dirt roads wind through lush greenery and calm surroundings, offering a picturesque setting for its inhabitants.
However, with progress came challenges, like a storm brewing on the horizon. Backwater pollution flowed like a sluggish river, staining the once vibrant fishing opportunities like a dark ink blot on a canvas, causing the island’s younger generation to scatter like seeds in the wind, seeking alternative careers like bees buzzing to different flowers. Despite this shift, the island’s charm persisted, drawing travellers like moths to a flame, seeking solace in the cool breezes and tranquil nature like a balm for their weary souls.
A local resident shared, “Cool breezes and the calm nature of this Island are like a gentle lullaby that lures in travellers like bees to honey.” The island is as proud as a peacock, with three teashops that shine like diamonds. It also has an anganwadi (nursery school) that is as nurturing as a mother’s embrace and a government Ayurvedic treatment centre that offers healing like a magical potion. These essential services are the lifeblood of the island’s tight-knit community, binding them together like threads in a tapestry.
One remarkable feature of Kakathuruth Island is the sense of security and unity among its residents. Renowned sculptor K. Ragunathan, who initially visited for sculpting purposes, eventually made the island his permanent home. He praised the island’s people, culture, and peaceful atmosphere, emphasizing the rarity of a place where one can leave doors open without fear of theft.
“Everyone knows everyone at this place,” Ragunathan noted, highlighting the familial bond shared by the island’s residents. This sense of unity extends beyond personal connections, with the island showcasing a model of proper secularism. Regardless of religion or background, the entire community comes together to celebrate festivals and events hosted by any resident.
The island’s fame reached new heights with National Geographic’s feature, which showcased its breathtaking sunset and unique way of life. However, not all seasons bring tranquility. During the rainy season, the island faces the threat of flooding in many parts. In response, the government has planned safety measures and bridge construction to ensure the safety of the island’s inhabitants.
